Today we’re celebrating a nightlife special, looking back on some of the places to enjoy a great night out in Southport over the years.
If you have any pictures of Southport’s pubs or nightclubs in years gone by, we’d love to see them.
For the first picture, it’s Happy New Year from Southport in – 2000!
This superb picture was taken outside Southport Arts Centre on Lord Street as revellers welcomed the new Millennium!
Do you remember partying like it’s 1999? Did you worry about computers crashing with the new date? Can you believe it’s now 26 years since then?
Happy new year!

Who remembers nights out at the former Colosseum nightclub in Southport?
Or Manhattans or Palm Court before that, in the Victoria buildings on the Promenade?
What are your memories of nights out in this building in its nightclub days?
This picture from the opening of The Colosseum on 3rd July 1999, showing Mitchel Owen, Garth Graham and owner Steven Rawsthorne.

One of Southport’s lost pubs is the former The Blundell Arms on Upper Aughton Road in Birkdale, which has since been demolished to make way for new homes.
People in this image include a Freddie Mercury tribute singer as guests toast the new Mr Q’s.

A Southport pub which remains popular to this day is The Imperial on Albert Road.
These days it’s a Joseph Holt’s pub, with plans coming soon to open a new Joseph Holt’s Hotel!
This picture was taken in August 1982, featuring John and Barbara Mooney, with beers on offer including Walker’s Warrington Ale, Skol Lager, Arctic Lite, Tetley Bitter, Tetley Mild and various bottled beers

Another pub long gone in the Southport area is The New Fermor Arms Inn.
The pub was situated at 21 Station Road in Rufford, near Southport, and closed in May 1992, before being converted into a rest home.
According to Central Lancs CAMRA: “It was the location of the New Fermor Arms Brewery, with brewing taking place at the pub from 1976 to 1992, although this was not continuous.
“For a time the brewery name was Blezards, and there were connections with Tetley Brewery. The most famous beer produced was Fettlers Ale.”

One of the most impressive pubs in Southport in the 1980s and 1990s was The Barons Bar, at The Scarisbrick Hotel on Lord Street, when it was managed by the late great Tony Cafferkey. Pictured here is Alan Bleeks.
