The Botanic Gardens Museum  in Churchtown in Southport has been a real talking point in recent days.

Sefton Council has announced a plan for new investment in the park, which could see the building brought back to life and attractions such as heritage fairground rides, boats back on the lake, a new cafe and a butterfly house.

Who says Southport doesn’t have Viking heritage?

A Viking parade makes its way down Chapel Street in Southport in July 1983, complete with Viking raiders and a large longboat!

This looks like it could have been one of the iconic Southport Carnival events, with huge crowds thronging the streets.

Chapel Street has since been pedestrianised, but was a three-lane road back in the 1980s.

In the background is Broadbents department store, which later became BHS.

The building is currently being converted into 30 new Prestige Stay aparthotel rooms, with new shops, a new bar and a new cafe.

Boots and Woolworths shops can also be seen.

Liverpool FC Captain Alan Hansen says cheers as he lifts a pint of beer behind the bar at The Bold Hotel on Lord Street in Southport in December 1983.

It clearly brought him luck, because at the end of this season he would go on to lift the Division One League Title, the European Cup and the Milk Cup (the League Cup), while neighbours Everton won the FA Cup at Wembley.

Alan Hansen would then go on to become a respected TV football pundit and has continued to live in Southport.

This has been a difficult couple of seasons for the Sandgrounders, with the 2019-20 season cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last season a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases led the Government to ban spectators just before the season started, with the season again failing to be completed.

Let’s hope for a full season this year, with fans allowed back into the ground to enjoy games once again at the Pure Stadium. Yellows!
