Southport FC have retained The Lancashire Challenge Trophy after a 5-3 win in a penalty shoot out.

The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

As 0-0 draws go it was a reasonably entertaining affair with both sides creating plenty of chances.

Brad Wade had a fine game betwen the sticks for Southport making a number of good saves to maintain his clean sheet.

At the other end Jack Doyle hit a free kick against the bar after only 6 minutes and Niall Watson went close in what became a stop start first half littered with stoppages.

Atherton can hold their heads high after a spirited performance and could easily have won it late on but were foiled by a superb Wade save that took the tie to penalties.

It is the 10th time we have won the Trophy.

The Southport penalty takers:

Oliver 1-0

Jack Doyle 2-1

Connor Heath 3-2

Charlie Munro 4-3

Josh Miles 5-3

It was our 17th penalty shoot out with 13 wins.
