“There will also be a minute’s applause before the game on Saturday, with players wearing black armbands, when members of Sam’s family will be present.

“Everyone at Southport Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our Life President Sam Shrouder who has passed away on Sunday.

“The Sam Shrouder Stand at The Big Help Stadium is testament to the work that, over many many years, Sam was involved in at the Club.

“As most people will know Sam has been battling with illness for some time but that battle was lost on Sunday.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Linda and all the family and friends of Sam.

“We will be bringing a full tribute to Sam in the coming days and invite people who knew him to write in (rob@southportfc.net) with their tributes which we will include on our website and in a future matchday programme of which Sam was a huge supporter and continued to have it posted out to him for every game.”

Club Director Steve Porter said: “I have lost a great friend I’ve known for over thirty years.

“Sam was the most wonderful person anybody could wish to meet.

“I really don’t know what else to say at the moment. Our thoughts are with his wife Linda, Ben his son and all his family. RIP my great friend Sam x”
