Chorley 3 Southport FC 0

A very disappointing afternoon saw The Sandgrounders falling to a 3-0 defeat away at local rivals Chorley.

The main talking point on arrival was whether the game would last the 90 minutes, the pitch was already heavy and with heavy rain forecast from kick off it could have put it in doubt.

It was not to be and the game went the distance and despite a reasonable opening 45 minutes which saw the sides go in level the second half was a non-event for Southport FC.

We did have a couple of chances in the first half and Tyler Walton should have done better in the 57th minute when he fired into the side netting. This was just after Chorley had opened the scoring through the impressive Justin Johnson.

It was one way traffic towards the Southport goal in the second period and Chris Renshaw was kept busy in goal but could do nothing to stop Jack Sampson scoring against his former club in the 77th minute.

The 83rd minute saw Chorley awarded a penalty which was duly despatched.

It was a special afternoon for former Souithport FC striker Jack Sampson and he was subbed off to a fine round of applause by both sets of fans which was great to see and he was duly awarded the Man Of The Match for the home side which again received deserved acclaim from the Southport supporters who had travelled in good numbers.

The game between Chorley FC and Southport FC was dedicated to Jack Sampson’s wife, as she battles cancer.

Hannah Sampson has been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer at the age of just 30.

Supporters of both clubs and anyone else who would like to help are now being urged to support the #HelpingHannahAppeal to support the young couple as Hannah undergoes treatment.
