Southport FC’s owners have thanked Chief Operating Officer Andy Burgess for his “commitment, professionalism and the support” after he said farewell following nearly three years with the club.

Andy Burgess was at the helm when new owners David Cunningham and Kieran Malone took over the club last year, leading a series of improvements to take the Sandgrounders forward.

A statement said: “Southport Football Club can confirm that our Chief Operating Officer over the weekend has stepped down from his role, bringing to an end almost three years of service at Haig Avenue.

“During his time with the club, he undertook a number of responsibilities across both football and operational areas and played an important role during a period of transition. In particular, his support and cooperation during the club’s change of ownership were greatly appreciated and helped ensure continuity and stability at a critical time.

“The owners, David Cunningham and Kieran Malone, would like to thank him for his commitment, professionalism and the support he provided during the takeover and beyond. His knowledge of the club and willingness to assist wherever required made a meaningful contribution behind the scenes.

“Everyone at Southport FC wishes him well for the future and thanks him for his efforts in representing the club. He departs with our respect and best wishes.

“Further updates regarding the club’s operational arrangements will be shared in due course.”

Supporters can hear more at a forthcoming Fans Forum, with members of the board, at the ground,  on Thursday 29th January 2026 starting at 7pm.

The forum will focus on the club’s commercial strategy and future direction, providing supporters with an opportunity to ask questions, share feedback, and gain insight directly from club leadership.

Andy Burgess said: “During the past three years, I have worked under three different owners and three different managers, and have been fortunate to serve the club in a variety of roles: Assistant Manager, Caretaker Manager, Head of Football Operations, and most recently as Chief Operating Officer. It has been an intense, demanding, and at times challenging period, but one I am proud of.

“I would like to place on record that I have nothing but positive things to say about Southport FC and, in particular, the current owners, David Cunningham and Kieran Malone. They have supported me through extremely difficult personal circumstances, for which I am genuinely and deeply grateful. That understanding and backing will not be forgotten.

“I would also like to pay tribute to Chairman Steve Porter, who continues to represent the club tirelessly up and down the country. His support, commitment, and backing of me have been in absolute abundance from day one.

“The volunteers are the absolute heartbeat of this football club. Without their commitment, time, and care, the club simply would not function on a day-to-day basis.

“Thank you also to the hospitality team, who have created a fantastic matchday setting and environment. I genuinely believe the hospitality offering at Haig Avenue is among the very best in the National League North.

“To our external service providers – thank you for your professionalism, reliability, and support. You have consistently complemented the work of the club staff and played an important role behind the scenes.

“I would also like to wish Neil Danns every success as manager of Southport FC. I was part of his recruitment process, including sitting in his first interview, and I am convinced that his drive, enthusiasm, and commitment to bringing success on the pitch will be rewarded. The same applies to all of the football staff, whose desire to bring success to Southport is clear to see.

“I sincerely hope Southport FC goes on to realise its immense potential. That will only truly be possible with the full support of the town of Southport, but the foundations are there.

“I leave with respect for the club, appreciation for the people, and pride in the work done.”
