A Southport campaigner who is increasing visibility for disabled people in the fashion world has been shortlisted for a major UK award.

Debbie-Lyn Connolly-Lloyd has been announced as a finalist in the Business Success Recognition Awards 2023 in the Overcoming Adversity / Against All Odds 2023 category.

Last month the model, actress and fashion designer won the Sefton Diversity and Inclusion Award, sponsored by Sefton Council, at the 2023 Pride Of Sefton Awards.

Debbie-Lyn Connolly-Lloyd said:

“It’s such an honour to be recognised in this category!

“I was struck down with a debilitating disability last June which meant I had to completely redirect my business.

“I was a very successful make-up artist and model. I am unable to work as a make-up artist now but I am harnessing strength from my new disability by striving to increase visibility for disabled people in the fashion world, and on our screens as a supporting actress.

“I also brought out my own curvy fashion range called DL Apparel which is bold, and colourful for women to celebrate their bodies!”

Since being diagnosed with a serious neurological condition in 2022, and becoming a wheelchair user, Debbie-Lyn has also worked tirelessly to ensure that all restaurants and bars in and around Sefton are completely accessible to disabled customers.

She has implemented an innovative idea, the first of its kind, for disability friendly symbols to be added against venues on TripAdvisor as well as leading a campaign to enforce The Equality Act 2010, at the point of a business start-up.

The campaign will see stickers displayed in windows alongside the food hygiene rating for passing customers, compiling an extensive list of venues in Sefton which are fully accessible to be issued to tourism information and media and contacting venues directly to ask for amendments to be made to become fully inclusive.

Stacey Calder established the Business Success Recognition Awards, sponsored by Coversure Leamington Spa, to celebrate the fantastic work being done by businesses and individuals within the UK business community. These inaugural awards are open to all organisations nationwide regardless of size or maturity.

The Business Success team independently judged over 300 entries and shortlisted the finalists, and a team of expert judges will be selecting the winners for each award.

There is a wide range of award categories which will be recognised and celebrated during an evening of entertainment and surprises.

The winners will be announced at the Recognition Awards ceremony on Saturday 3rd June 2023, at the Eastside Rooms, Birmingham. For those not in the room you can follow the event using #BSNAwards2023

Founder, Stacey Calder said:

“These awards come at a time where recognition for small businesses is critical.

“Not only have I had the privilege of reading over 300 entries, it makes me incredibly proud to be able to give a platform for small businesses to not only recognise their achievements, but to give them a way to raise their profile and showcase what they do.

“Visibility is key to a business at any time, but right now it’s vital. Last year’s awards happened just after lockdown and you could feel the support in the room, like a weight had been lifted.

“This year has seen new challenges for businesses, so we want to recognise that the hard work continues and deserves to be recognised.”

  8. Hey there! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering which
blog platform are you using for this website? I’m getting tired
of WordPress because I’ve had issues with hackers and I’m looking at
options for another platform. I would be great if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
