Students at Southport College were given an exclusive tour inside one of Southport’s most historic buildings as it undergoes a fascinating restoration process.

Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery students were kindly given a private tour of the Victorian, Grade II Listed building at 339 Lord Street by the Director of Craft & Sons, Duncan Craft.

The bare shell of a building is currently in the process of being transformed into a brand new climbing centre and cafe.

There will be climbing walls reaching heights of 4.5m with an onsite cafe for members of the public to climb, relax, and enjoy the periodic building.

Painstaking work is taking place by Craft & Sons to convert what they believe is one of the “most exceptional Listed buildings in Southport”.

The family-run firm is also improving 479-481 Lord Street, previously the Jaeger shop, further along the boulevard.

The business is investing over half a million pounds in the new climbing gym which they believe will bring something new and exciting to the town centre.

“This is one of the most exceptional Listed buildings I have ever worked on,” says Duncan Craft. “The quality of the craftsmanship is remarkable.

“Lord Street is one of the most outstanding streets in the whole of England because of its heritage and its architecture.

“It deserves – and should – be properly restored.”

The historic three-storey site is part of a wider group of buildings known as the Albany Buildings, which stand prominently on the road. It was designed by architect EW Johnson and built in 1884.

It previously hosted an auctioneer and firm of surveyors.

On the day of their tour, Southport College students were treated to a full exploration of the building, including a talk on its history and the work that is being done throughout to restore it.

Keen to involve local people within the project, Duncan Craft approached Southport College for a talented joinery apprentice to join their team.

Student Luke Kane was given the position and is playing an integral part of the renovation, working hard to restore it not only to its former glory but breathing new life into this landmark while staying true to its Victorian charm.

Duncan Craft has also been kind enough to offer the chance for work experience placements to Southport College Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery students throughout the remainder of the project.

A Southport College spokesperson said: “We are incredibly proud of our students who will be playing a vital role in the restoration of 339 Lord Street.

“Their dedication and expertise are not only helping to breathe new life into this iconic Victorian building, but also contributing to the conservation and heritage of Southport.

“By collaborating with Craft & Sons on this project, our students gain invaluable real-world experience while contributing to the creation of a vibrant new community space.

“This project exemplifies Southport College’s commitment to nurturing skilled craftspeople and supporting the growth of the local economy.

“We look forward to seeing the completed climbing centre attract residents and visitors alike!”
