The Ship and Anchor pub on Cable Street in Southport

Guest Blog by Neville Grundy, Southport and West Lancashire CAMRA

I wrote recently that the popular local music venue in Southport, the Shop & Anchor on Cable Street, was due to close. The good news is that the venue has been rescued and will remain open. It is rare to hear such good news about pubs nowadays.

It’s not such good news that the Willow Grove on Lord Street, Southport, had its final day of trading last Sunday, 5th March. This leaves the Court Leet in Ormskirk and the Sir Henry Segrave in Southport as the only remaining Wetherspoons pubs in our area.

► News of another beer festival within easy travelling distance of the West Lancs and Southport area: Liverpool’s Ship & Mitre pub is holding their 15th beer festival at Hulme Hall in Port Sunlight over the Easter weekend: Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th April.

There will be more than 200 beers: 80 real ales and 80 craft beers, as well as continental lagers, ciders, perries and a range of spirits, including a gin bar. Beers from around the country will be on offer as well as beers from great local breweries.

Entertainment will be available during all sessions, except on Friday afternoon which they will keep as the quiet session for those who prefer to drink without the accompaniment of music.

If you become peckish, you can enjoy snacks from the selection of local stallholders, and hot food will be available from Hulme Hall. Vegetarian options will also be available.

Hulme Hall is at 23 Bolton Road, Port Sunlight, Wirral, CH62 5DH, and is just five minutes’ walk from Port Sunlight railway station on the Merseyrail network. Train journey times vary but at most the trip is 1 hour 12 minutes from Ormskirk and 1 hour 19 minutes from Southport. On both routes you will need to change at Liverpool Central.

The venue does have a large car park, but CAMRA strongly advises drivers to leave their cars at home.

It would be best to buy your tickets on-line in advance. If there are any unsold tickets, they will be available for sale on the door, but this cannot be guaranteed as I have been informed that advance tickets are selling well.
