Following my article last week about CAMRA’s May Is Mild Month campaign, I have been contacted by Andrew, the owner of the Grasshopper micropub in Hillside. He tells me that throughout the month of May the Grasshopper will be promoting Mild.

There will be several different milds on the bar to showcase the different styles and flavours available in this unique type of beer: dark milds, ruby milds, toffee milds, fruit milds, golden milds and one or two stronger milds.

Throughout the month there will be at least 12 different milds on offer. The current beer list and tasting notes will be available on-line on the Real Ale Finder website at: www.realalefinder.com/beerboard/?grasshopper-southport.

The “Be mellow have a mild” promotion will allow customers to buy 4 pints of mild and receive a free pint. All 4 pints do not need to be bought on the same day and different milds can be sampled  throughout the month. There is no limit on the free pints that mild enthusiasts can collect. The free pints of mild should be claimed before the end of May. Mild cards are available at the Grasshopper.

Throughout the year the Grasshopper serves eight changing real ales and six real ciders. The pub has two rooms, one of which can be used for meetings or functions. The pub hosts monthly meetings of CoLAPs (Coast of Lancashire Ale Preservation Society) on the first Monday of each month which feature regular speakers on beer related topics. CoLAPs is the name of the local branch of the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood (SPBW), a beer consumer group that is even older than CAMRA. Also on the third Wednesday of the month, there is an informal acoustic song session featuring local singers and musicians.

The pub has won various CAMRA awards over the years, including the North Merseyside Pub of the Year award and the Cider Pub of the Year award. You can find it on Facebook. The Grasshopper is at 70 Sandon Road, a short walk from Hillside railway station.

The national CAMRA website is at: camra.org.uk. The Southport & West Lancs Branch website is at southport.camra.org.uk.
