The Wetherspoon pub in Southport is celebrating its 30th birthday – and everyone is invited!
The Sir Henry Segrave pub on Lord Street, one of the busiest Wetherspoon pubs in the region, is hosting a special birthday event on Monday, 15th September 2025.
People will be able to enjoy a special Meet the Brewer and Tap Takeover event with Phoenix Brewery from 6pm onwards, which is free to attend.
Throughout Monday staff will be wearing bright colours, with customers invited to join them and dress brightly too if they wish.
The venue is named after a Southport legend, world famous racing driver Sir Henry Segrave.
In 1926 he raised the land-speed record to 152mph in his 350hp 4.5-litre Sunbeam Ladybird, on Southport’s Birkdale Sands. At the turn of the 20th century, Southport was a leading venue for motor-racing. The centenary of Sir Henry Segrave’s world record achievement will take place next year.
Wetherspoon Southport Shift Manager Stuart Ochiltree, who has been at the pub for six years, said:
“We’re really looking forward to celebrating our 30th birthday on Monday and we’d love to see as many people as possible join us!
“We will be wearing bright colours – we have chosen to wear green – and everyone is welcome to come in wearing bright colours that day.
“There will be balloons, birthday cake, food tasters, and a charity raffle with the opportunity to win a hamper. Money will be raised for Young Lives VS. Cancer, which is the official Wetherspoon affiliated charity.
“We held a ‘Battle of The Brewers’ event earlier this year, which was won by The Phoenix Brewery, and we are delighted to see them joining us for our birthday event as their prize.
“We often do Meet the Brewer and Tap Takeover events, and this will be a particularly special one.
“People will be able to learn more about the brewer; more about their beers; and they can also hear the story about how their famous beer, Wobbly Bob, got its name!
“There will be some great Phoenix Brewery beers on sale leading up to, during and after our birthday event, including Wobbly Bob, Hopsack, Boss Man’s Brew, Arizona, Golden Pale, and West Coast IPA.
“Wobbly Bob and Phoenix Brewery have built up a real cult following here.
“Phoenix Brewery will be selling merchandise and gift packs while they’re here.
“The Sir Henry Segrave pub first opened our doors on 1st September 1995 and we’ve become a real local landmark.
“This pub is the first port of call for lots of people enjoying big local events such as the Southport Flower Show, Southport Air Show and the British Musical Fireworks Championship, which we’re looking forward to in the last weekend of September.
“This is such a great spot to be, on the famous Lord Street boulevard, with ample outdoor seating. It’s a perfect place to soak up the sunshine and do some people-watching.
“We are blessed to have lots of lovely regulars, there is a real sense of community here. We get lots of visitors and holiday makers calling in too.
“We’re often the top of our area for cask ale sales, but recently we held top rank for two consecutive weeks within the whole company. We sold the largest volume of cask ale sales from all 800 JD Wetherspoon pubs in the UK, serving almost 2.500 pints of real ale in just one week.
“We have 12 hand pumps at the moment – I think it might be the most in Southport – and we are looking at introducing two more, which would take our capacity to being able to serve up to 3,000 pints per week.”
The Sir Henry Segrave pub is a significant local employer, with a team of around 60 local people.
Earlier this year Wetherspoon was awarded planning permission to create a new Wetherspoon Hotel on the upper floors of the Pavilion Building, with the rooms situated above the pub.
No date has yet been set for when the work will begin, but the new facility would give a huge boost to the southern end of Lord Street – ‘The Southern Quarter’.
The Sir Henry Segrave is open seven days a week, from 8am – midnight Sunday to Thursday, and 8am – 1am every Friday and Saturday.
The venue is a popular local venue for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Stuart said: “Our breakfasts are hugely popular. Who doesn’t love to start the day with a good Wetherspoon Breakfast?
“They start at just £2.99 for a small breakfast, or £4.99 for a traditional breakfast.
“We have recently introduced our new gourmet burgers, which are doing very well.
“We do a Small Plates Day every Monday; gourmet burgers every Tuesday; Pizza Club every Wednesday; and Curry Club is every Thursday.
“We’re always very busy here, through morning, noon and night.
“We’d like to thank all our customers and all our staff, past and present, for supporting us over the past 30 years.”
