The organisers of the International peace Day at Wayfarers Shopping Arcade in Southport have thanked visitors for the “warmth and support” of everyone who enjoyed the event.
The celebration of Ukrainian culture on Saturday (21st September 2024) included choirs, live music, DJs, art, food, workshops, theatre performances, a painting workshop, guitar playing, gifts and more.
Ukrainian Harmony Choir, conducted by Irina Shkrum, performed traditional Ukrainian folk songs.
There was a Motanka Doll Workshop led by Olena Kondratenko, where families learned how to create traditional Ukrainian Motanka dolls, a symbol of love, family, and well-being.
Shoppers then enjoyed an excellent musical performance by 15-year-old Nastya Sinkova.
The afternoon began with a mini theatre performance of Ivan Kupala, a traditional Ukrainian summer solstice celebration, directed by Julia Peron.
It was followed by a Petrykivka painting workshop for all ages, led by artist Vita Maglevana; a musical performance by Nastya Sinkova; a raffle with lots of prizes; a guitar performance by Viktor Tyslenko; and a Ukrainian Harmony Choir encore performance.
The fun was organised by Nina Karetska and Vita Maglevana.
Nina Karetska said: “I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Margaret Tarpey and the entire team at the Wayfarers Shopping Arcade for making it possible for us to come together and celebrate International Peace Day in such a welcoming and special way.
“The event held deep significance for us, not just as a moment of reflection and unity, but as an opportunity to connect with the broader community. The warmth and support we received from everyone who attended truly moved us.
“It was incredibly uplifting to hear so many kind and encouraging words throughout the day. The event became a bridge, allowing us to share and celebrate a piece of our culture with those around us, and in return, we were touched by the interest and open-heartedness we encountered.
“One of the most memorable moments for us was meeting fellow Ukrainians who were previously unaware of our community here in Southport. Seeing these connections form, especially at a time when solidarity and understanding mean so much, was truly inspiring.
“We also want to extend a special thank you to the local English community, whose presence at the event and continued support have meant the world to us.
“Their kindness and willingness to contribute to our cause have been invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for the sense of unity and friendship they’ve shown. It is through these gestures that we feel stronger and more connected as a community, knowing we are not alone.
“Lastly, we would like to offer our deepest thanks to Margaret Tarpey and the Wayfarers Shopping Arcade for their hospitality, generosity, and unwavering support.
“It is through events like these, and the partnerships that make them possible, that we can continue to build stronger, more compassionate connections within our community.
“We look forward to future opportunities where we can come together again in the spirit of peace and understanding.”
