Sefton Council Leader Cllr Marion Atkinson has been presented with the Judge’s Exceptional Community Leadership Award for her “exceptional leadership and empathy” in the wake of this summer’s tragic events in Southport where three young girls were killed and several others severely injured.

Cllr Atkinson was honoured in the national 2024 LGIU & CCLA Cllr Awards.

Organisers of the awards said that ‘the winners of each category have all made positive and lasting impacts on the lives of their constituents and have shown exceptional leadership skills’.

Judges said: “Councillor Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council demonstrated exceptional leadership and empathy in the aftermath of the devastating knife attack earlier this year in Southport.

“She is a relentless advocate for community regeneration and social and educational initiatives.”

A spokesperson for the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority said: “Huge congratulations to Leader of Sefton Council, Cllr Marion Atkinson who scooped the Judge’s Exceptional Community Leadership Award in the annual Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) and CCLA Cllr Awards.

“It was a triple celebration on the night as our Cabinet Member for Innovation, Cllr Liam Robinson, was also awarded Leader of the Year, for his ‘calm, committed leadership’ and focus on integrity and good governance, helping to lead Liverpool City Council out of statutory intervention.

“And Cllr Rahima Farah, also from Liverpool City Council, won the Community Champion award for making an outstanding impact across the community with her passion for tackling health inequalities and projects that increase opportunities for children and young people.”
