Plans have been unveiled to reduce the speed limit on 16 Southport roads from 30mph to 20mph.
The move is aimed at improving safety for vulnerable road users and supporting the planned public realm improvements.
The changes are due to take place in Norwood Ward and Kew Ward to support the ongoing Southport Eastern Access (SEA) Scheme.
A report going before Sefton councillors says: “These measures include enhancements to public realm spaces and revisions to speed limits in both residential and commercial roads.
“This report recommends the implementation of a 20mph speed limit on selected roads currently designated as 30mph.
“These roads are situated within a wider area where approximately 95% of the local highway network has already transitioned to a 20mph limit.
“Although these specific roads were previously excluded from the initial rollout, recent public consultation, highway safety assessments, and data cleansing activities have identified them as priority routes and roads for inclusion.
“Lowering the speed limit on these roads is expected to enhance safety for vulnerable road users and align with the planned public realm improvements.
“The identification of additional roads for inclusion has been facilitated by ongoing data cleansing activities, as part of a national initiative led by the Department for Transport to digitise all Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) held by Local Authorities.
“This audit process revealed two further locations within the Norwood area that warrant inclusion in the 20mph speed limit order:
- A short section of Hart Street and the full length of Tithebarn Road, both of which are directly linked to SEA mitigation measures.
- Three residential cul-de-sacs off Moss Lane and Argameols Close, which are currently not covered by any existing 20mph TRO
The introduction of a 20mph speed limit across all these identified roads is expected to deliver a range of benefits, including:
- Safety Improvements: Lower speeds reduce the likelihood and severity of collisions, particularly in areas with increased pedestrian activity and near residential properties and community facilities.
- Enhanced Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety: A reduced speed environment supports safer conditions for vulnerable road users, encouraging walking and cycling as viable and attractive modes of transport.
- Support for Public Realm Enhancements: The speed reduction complements the SEA Scheme’s objectives to improve the quality and usability of public spaces, fostering a more inclusive and accessible urban environment.
“Any objections received within the 21 day objection period will be reported back to the Licensing & Regulatory Committee.”
