Former Southport MP Damien Moore has congratulated new MP Patrick Hurley – the town’s first ever Labour MP – on winning the Southport seat on Thursday, as he highl;ighted the need for his Conservative Party to ‘rebuild’.
He said: “I want to say a big thank you to all of the thousands of people who voted for me on Thursday.
“It was a very difficult night for the Conservative Party, and we will need to rebuild to earn back the trust of those who switched their vote to other parties this time around.
“In the early hours of Friday morning, as the results were declared, I offered my congratulations to Patrick on his election.
“I also want to congratulate all the other candidates for putting themselves forward and running the campaigns they did.
“To my team in my office – past and present – thank you for all your work over the years in support of Southport residents. We’ve helped thousands of people, and I’m really proud of everything you’ve all done.
“To the dedicated volunteers and activists at Southport Conservative Association, thank you for all of your support over the four elections we have fought together.
“It’s been the honour of my life to serve as Southport’s MP – thank you for entrusting me over the past seven years.”
Damien Moore was elected in Southport in 2017 and 2019, having finished narrowly second to Liberal Democrat MP John Pugh in 2015.
On Thursday, Patrick Hurley was voted in as the first ever Labour MP for Southport.
Labour also won the 2024 General Election overall with a landslide victory.
Mr Hurley earned 17,252 votes; with the previous MP, Conservative candidate Damien Moore, second on 11,463 votes.
The full results in Southport are:
Patrick Hurley (Labour) 17,252
Damien Moore (Conservatives) 11,463
Andrew Lynn (Reform) 7,395
Erin Harvey (Liberal Democrats) 5,868
Edwin Black (Green) 2,159
Sean Halsall (Independent) 922
There was a turnout of 45,186 (61.36%).
There was a change in the boundaries this time, which has seen Ainsdale become part of the Sefton Central Constituency.
That seat was held by Labour MP Bill Esterson, while sitting Labour MP Peter Dowd held Bootle.
It means every seat in Merseyside is now held by Labour MPs.
