Patrick Hurley is voted as Southport's first ever Labour MP at the 2024 General Election

New Southport MP Patrick Hurley has vowed to solve the ‘crisis’ in NHS dentistry in Southport.

The Labour MP, who was elected following the General election on 4th July 2024, said he has heard the frustrations from many local families at the inability to find any NHS dentist places in the town.

One family he spoke to had a 60 mile round trip as the nearest option they could locate.

Patrick Hurley said: “One of the biggest priorities that voters in Southport had when I was out canvassing was that so many of them have been unable to access NHS dentistry.

“There are simply no places available in Southport. People are desperate.

“There is a real crisis in NHS dentistry in our area.

“It is extremely difficult for people in Southport to be able to register with an NHS dentist.

“That includes me at the moment! I haven’t been able to find one either!

“I am currently in the same situation myself as other people.

“When I was canvassing and knocking on doors throughout Southport one couple told me they had searched everywhere for an NHS dentist. The closest they had been able to find was a dentist in Newton-leWillows!

“Now I have nothing against Newton-le-Willows, it is a lovely place, but if you need to go there to be able to access dental treatment, it is over a 60-mile road trip.

“That is just not acceptable.

“We need more NHS dentists available in Southport.

“We need to be able to work closely with the industry and with the NHS to fix this situation.

“People are having to resort to pulling their own teeth out.

“It is going to take some time, but I promise people in Southport that we will fix this crisis.”
