Merseyside Police have arrested eight people saying they have made “a strong start” in their campaign to crack down on anti-social behaviour and shoplifting in Southport town centre.
Merseyside Police’s Southport Town Centre Team launched on 9th June as part of the force’s commitment to tackle issues that matter to the local community.
The team say they have made a strong start, delivering interventions aimed at tackling persistent retail crime and anti-social behaviour.
Through proactive foot patrols and close engagement with local businesses, the team has already made eight arrests, conducted 23 stop searches and issued both a community resolution order and a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) — all within the first few weeks.
Following the arrests five people have been charged with offences including shop theft, robbery, handling stolen goods, racially aggravated public order, assault and breaches of community behaviour orders.
Inspector Graham Fisher, Neighbourhood Policing said: “These results show our commitment to making Southport a safer place to live, work, and visit. We’re targeting those who cause the most harm and using every tool available — including CBOs — to disrupt their offending.
“Our presence in the town centre is already making a difference, and we’re grateful for the support of the local community.”
The team’s efforts are already being recognised. The visible police presence and quick action on crime and anti-social behaviour have been welcomed by local residents and businesses. Members of the public have told officers they feel safer in the town centre since the new team began their work
The Southport Town Centre Team continues to encourage residents and businesses to report suspicious activity and engage with officers on patrol. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance public confidence, reduce crime, and build a safer, more vibrant town centre.
A robust policing operation has been put in place across the region as part of the national Safer Streets Summer campaign, to ensure residents, workers and visitors to Merseyside are able to enjoy what the city has to offer safely.
