Merseyside Police say they have been ‘blown away’ by the support the community of Southport has shown following the riot in the Hart Street area on Tuesday night.
Local people reacted to the extensive destruction caused by turning up in large numbers to rebuild walls and windows, clear away debris and show support for terrified local residents.
Yesterday, the area was visited by Merseyside Police (Chief Constable Serena Kennedy), Sefton Council Leader Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council Acting Chief Executive Andrea Watts, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service Chief Fire Officer Phil Garrigan, Liverpool City Region Combined Regional Authority Mayor Steve Rotheram;, Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell and Southport Hospital Medical Director Dr Peter Williams.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: “We know the events that have taken place over the past few days have shaken our community, and we want to reassure you that your safety, as always, is our priority.
“In times like these, it’s important for us to come together and support one another. We have been blown away by the support our communities have shown us on Wednesday.

“From the ladies who turned up with cakes for our officers, to the members of the community and a local supermarket chain who handed out food and cold drinks, and the endless people who stopped us to simply say ‘thank you,’ we are so grateful.
“We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to the victims of Monday’s devastating incident and their families.
“Remember, we are stronger together. Let’s unite as a community and show that we will not be defined by fear, but by our resilience and solidarity.
“Stay safe, stay strong, and take care of each other.”
