Pop legend Marc Almond has urged people to support a talented young busker in Southport.
The star singer and frontman of Soft Cell, who has sold over 20million singles worldwide with hits including ‘Tainted Love’ and ‘Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart’, saw Mitia Smirnov as he was in Southport town centre earlier today.
Mitia is unable to return to Russia and has not been able to see his parents for a number of months.
Marc was in town for a visit ahead of his gig at Manchester Bridgewater Hall in Manchester tonight.
He was impressed by Mitia playing guitar as he sang ‘People Are Strange’ by The Doors.
He shared a video of the performance on his Instagram page, asking his 47,000 followers to spare some change and support a young musician with real ability if they see him performing in Southport.
Marc Almond posted on his Instagram page: “Walking down Chapel Street in Southport today this was the perfect soundtrack. There were some very strange people about.
“Mitia Smirnov is half Russian and can’t currently return to Russia and hasn’t seen his parents in a while.
“I want to wish him luck and a Doors songs is worth a few quid of anyone’s money. Good luck Mitia.”

The post has already been seen nearly 1,300 times and has attracted lots of positive comments – including from Eurythmics star Annie Lennox, who posted: “Beautiful precious people get caught through the cracks of political actions…
‘When you’re strange’ -.
“Best of luck Mitia!!”
