A couple of hours spent in the Botanic Gardens in Churchtown on a beautiful day, as the summer holidays draw to a close, is a popular idea with many families.

On Saturday this is exactly what families of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, on Preston New Road in Southport, had organised, but they arrived in the park armed with gloves, litter pickers and plenty of big black bin bags.

Many park goers were amused at the antics of the families as they carefully combed the park searching for litter.

Some of the children made the task into a competition.

When finished the group rewarded their efforts by enjoying a picnic together in the shade of the trees.

Anthony Wall, one of the dads who helped on the day reported, ‘This was a great fully supervised activity to do with the children, as not only did it help clean up this beautiful park, but it also made an impact on my children’s understanding of litter in the environment. Later on in the day we met up with other family members, at a different local beauty spot, and my children eagerly continued rooting out litter.’

Pictured are some of the group, before they sanitised their hands and sat down to enjoy their picnic.
