Formby’s very own guardian angels stepped in to clean our beaches after they were swamped by Covidiots.
Wednesday was the hottest day of the year so far and despite pleas to stay away, thousands of people descended on Formby Beach and Freshfield Beach.
When they left, a trail of rubbish was visible on the golden sands and strewn over sand dunes and car parks.
But the Formby & Freshfield Beach Litter Angels stepped in to help clear sections of our famous beauty spots, collecting over 10 bags full of rubbish.
The group is currently looking for volunteers to help them. As well as urging people to take their rubbish home with them in future.
Amber, the group’s founding admin, said: “After seeing reports of the swarms, I had to go and do something. So me and my household member went to the beach.
“Only three small areas in the dunes were cleared. Rubbish was still on the beach as there was far too much.
“I took my car because we did not know whether there would be any space in any of the bins – thankfully there was.
“We started at 7.30pm and finished at about 9.30pm. We collected 10 bags and two buckets… that’s what we collect on one group night!
“This was from.the car park and three sites next to each other in the dunes near the main entrance.
“There were still loads scattered in the dunes and on the beach. But we couldn’t collect any more as it was getting too dark.
“It is truly disheartening to see this, to see this on a normal summer day let alone a pandemic!”
Formby & Freshfield Beach Litter Angels are grateful to anyone helping to keep local beaches clean.
Amber said: “I cannot wait till we can start our big group cleans again. But all us Admin, want to be able to do it safely so all who attend are safe.
“We will only be doing group cleans when it is safe to do so for all our members. We will only be moving forward when it is safe to do so.
“To each and everyone one of you doing your bit at this time, thank you! We just have to keep going! No matter what!”
