Let’s Be Blunt has highlighted the importance of responsible knife retailing after the Government called for tougher standards around how knives are marketed, sold and displayed.

The Government has warned businesses against violent knife marketing and called for tougher standards on how knives are displayed and sold, including a renewed Responsible Retailers’ Scheme.

Let’s Be Blunt founder Leanne Lucas has been working alongside the Home Office, government ministers and national partners to strengthen approaches to responsible knife retailing, bringing lived experience and a focus on prevention into discussions with retailers and policymakers.

In Southport, Cllr Mike Sammon has been working with Let’s Be Blunt to raise concerns about knife displays, with Sefton Council officers following them up with retailers. Cllr Sammon also called for Sefton Council last month for greater engagement with retailers on responsible knife sales.

Leanne Lucas said:

“Responsible retailing is an essential part of preventing knife harm. Every knife has a journey, from design and manufacture to sale, storage and access, and every stage presents an opportunity to reduce risk. Through Let’s Be Blunt, we’re encouraging retailers to consider safer kitchen knife alternatives, responsible displays and more proactive approaches to knife sales. Meaningful prevention requires action nationally and locally, and collaboration across all sectors.”

Cllr Sammon said:

“This is real progress for Leanne and Let’s Be Blunt. She has taken these concerns directly to Government and major retailers and deserves huge credit for helping drive action.

“I’m also grateful to Sefton Council officers for their response to the concerns we have raised and for the action they have taken in Southport.”
