Eric Woodcock

Do you think of electric vehicles as a modern invention?

They’ve been on the scene for well over a century – and you can learn more about them at an event taking place in Southport this week.

Southport University Extension Society (SUES) will present a talk by Eric Woodcock titled: ‘Lankie ‘Lekkies – Electric Vehicles from the 1880s to the Present Day’.

It takes place from 2.30pm on Friday 27th October 2023, admission free* (details below) at All Saints Church Hall, Park Road, Southport, PR9 9JR.

Chris Nelson from SUES said: “Far from being a recent innovation, battery-powered electric commercial vehicles have been part of the British scene for well over a century.

“We all recognise milk floats, but they were also used as mobile shops, delivery vans and even bin wagons.

“Eric’s talk will explore their fascinating history from the 1880s to the present day, and show what an important part firms in Southport and around the North West have played, and will play in the future.”

*SUES (Southport University Extension Society) runs a programme of courses and talks on a wide variety of subjects, providing quality learning for everyone. These talks are free of charge for members and (as a one-off taster) for anyone considering joining (only £10 per year).
