People are being urged to lose weight to help protect them against the impact of coronavirus.
Southport Slimming World consultant Dee Wright agrees there has never been a more important time to get yourself fighting fit in order to protect yourself against the virus which has claimed thousands of lives and seen many more admitted to intensive care in the UK since the outbreak began in March.
Joining Slimming World groups is even more accessible for people who couldn’t previously get out to attend the traditional weekly Slimming World classes at St Simon and St Judes Church Hall, with Dee now running group sessions via Zoom.
Dee said: “These are very challenging times. We are all in the same storm, but we are in very different boats.
“However we can lose weight, and my members are proof of that. I have awarded many half stone and stone awards to people who have joined since the lockdown and just last week I awarded a 3 Stone Award to a gentleman who joined the week before lockdown!
“Scientists are now saying that people who suffer with diabetes are at very high risk of being seriously affected if they contract coronavirus. People with a high BMI are really at risk too.

“We need to do what we can to lose weight and be in the best possible shape by eating well and keeping active.
“I can really understand that people are stressed and anxious and that emotions are high. As a Slimmer myself I know it’s during those times that food is often something that people turn to for comfort.
“Losing weight and giving ourselves the very best chance against coronavirus is something we can do with the help and support you find in a Slimming World group.”
It seems the past couple of months haven’t been doing much for our waistlines.
New figures released this week revealed that half of Britons admit they have piled on the pounds during lockdown – putting them more at risk of coronavirus.
A study by King’s College London also found one in seven adults have not left their homes to exercise in the past week, fuelling concerns about adding to the obesity crisis.
NHS data has already revealed that severely overweight people are more likely to die from Covid-19.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson was believed to have weighed over 17 stone when he was admitted to hospital suffering with Covid-19. He is convinced that the reason he ended up in intensive care was because of his weight.
Obesity is the second biggest coronavirus risk factor, after age, and more than a quarter of people in Britain are obese.
Deciding now to start to lose weight by joining Slimming World is something that Dee Wright believes is vital.
She said: “Our roles as Slimming World consultants have become even more important than ever.
“And people can get started straight away, because of technology we are able to connect with people from the comfort of their own homes.”
The Zoom sessions are proving to be incredibly popular with members who are loving the opportunity to get ideas and inspiration to eat well at home.
Slimming World Southport with Dee Zoom meetings take place on: Wednesdays (9.30am, 10.45am); Thursdays (5.15pm, 6.30pm and 8.15pm); and Fridays (9.30am).
