Audiences are in for a superb night when Jo Caulfield performs at Southport Comedy Festival this autumn – just don’t head down if you’re wanting a quiet night!
She has a long list of people on her ever-growing hitlist – Room 101 would not be big enough, so she’s choosing the huge Festival Marquee at Victoria Park in Southport instead.
Festival goers be warned…
“It’s been an up and down year for everyone so I have a lot to talk about,” said Jo.
“Also there’s loads of people and things I need to slag off. It’ll be a fast paced show – so many a***holes, so little time.”
People can see Jo Caulfield, as well as the equally legendary Ed Byrne, in Best of the Fest at Southport Comedy Festival on Sunday, 9th October 2022.
Tickets are £17 each and are available here: southportcomedyfestival.com
The title of Jo’s recent tour gives a clue as to what audiences can expect.
She recently proved a hit at the Edinburgh Festival, with her Here Comes Trouble tour.
She said: “If you like laughing you’ll be alright but if you take yourself seriously then I am not for you.
“This is partly my Here Comes Trouble Show from this year’s Edinburgh Festival but also some new thoughts I’ve had since then.”
Performing in Edinburgh was an experience she enjoyed, for both personal and professional reasons.
“I live in Edinburgh so I can walk to work and be home drinking wine 20 minutes after my show.”
Whether you’ve seen her on TV shows such as Have I Got News For You or Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, heard her on the radio on Just a Minute or Stop The Press, or caught her live at one of her award-winning Edinburgh Festival shows, the chances are you’re already familiar with Jo’s work.
Described by The Observer as “one of the finest female comics at work” and by The Scotsman as “quite simply, a damn funny woman” Jo can regularly be seen headlining the UK’s biggest and best comedy clubs. She is also in high demand on the corporate circuit.
Behind scenes Jo is a respected writer, having served as a writer / programme consultant on all five series of Graham Norton’s BAFTA Award winning So Graham Norton and as head writer on both Ruby Wax’s Waiting Game and Zoe Ball’s Strictly Dance Fever. Jo has also written for – among others – Joan Rivers, Ant & Dec and Anne Robinson.
Reverent, she is not. Few are immune from her scathing musings.
She has a lot to talk about. We’ve had an eventful few weeks, with a new Prime Minister, the nation in mourning for the Queen’s funeral, people in uproar over Phil and Holly ‘queue jumping’, and so much more – what does she make of what’s been happening recently?
“I had great respect for the Queen,” said Jo, “But I think she must’ve been exhausted, I bet she couldn’t wait to get in the ground and have a rest. She’s earned it.”
After being locked away in the pandemic and with events such as Southport Comedy Festival and other live shows being cancelled in recent years, is Jo finding that audiences are enjoying being able to get out to see live comedy again?
She said: “There’s a real buzz in audiences, people are so happy to be out again.
“Even a cynical misanthrope like me has a certain love of my fellow man at the moment… it won’t last. I shall be back to my prickly self shortly.”
