A large white heavy goods vehicle has collided with a respite centre for disabled children in Southport.

The incident happened at the home at Springbrook Children’s Home on the corner of Sandbrook Road and Meadow Lane in Woodvale this morning.

Thankfully, the house was empty at the time.

One neighbour near the scene said: “My whole house shook, I felt it laying in my bed.

“I was in bed at around 9.30am after my late shift and I was just about to get up, heard a massive boom, then my whole house shook.

“The truck drove from Sandbrook Road right into that house.”

Snow and hailstones fell in Southport earlier today and it is not yet known whether icy road conditions contributed to the crash.

The home is opposite the junction of the two roads.

Merseyside Police officers and Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service firefighters were swiftly at the scene.

The North West Air Ambulance helicopter also landed in the area.

Two people were found trapped inside the vehicle.

One of the them was helped from the lorry by firefighters while a second was checked over by paramedics.

A Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “One person was thought to have had head injuries and the other person neck and arm injuries.

“They were checked at the scene by paramedics. There are not thought to be any other injuries.”

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area.

The vehicle has now been removed from the scene.
