The Guest House in Southport has been awarded North Merseyside Pub Of The Year

The Guest House pub in Southport has been awarded the title of North Merseyside Pub Of The Year!

The traditional century-old venue, on Union Street in Southport town centre, was given the accolade by Southport and West Lancs CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale). It is famous for its friendly atmosphere, beautiful surroundings and wide selection of top quality real ales.

The West Lancashire Pub Of The Year award was presented to Taproom No 12 at 12 Burscough Street in Ormskirk.

Branch Chair Doug Macadam presented the certificates to the pubs, worthy winners both.

Guest House landlady Gail Heyes said: “We are very pleased to have won!

“After the difficult times all businesses have been through, still trading after 21 years is an award in itself.

“To be recognised again by CAMRA for our quality cask ale is amazing. Big thank you to our loyal team.”

CAMRA spokesperson Neville Grundy said: “The impressive exterior of The Guest House is half timbered, and inside the walls are wood-panelled, so people often assume it is much older than it really is: just over 100 years old.

“There are three separate rooms and a drinking area around the bar.

“Above the bar there are glass screens which many years ago used to be pulled down at closing time, but are now fixed.

“The interior is mostly unaltered and the pub is listed in CAMRA’s National Inventory, a record of pub interiors worthy of both protection and celebration, the only pub in Southport with this distinction.

“Outside there is seating to the front of the pub and in the attractive courtyard to the rear, which has a covered area for smokers.

“This pub regularly has up to eleven real ales of a variety of styles from different breweries and is well-known in the town for the quality of its beers. It too has live music most weekends, acoustic song and tunes sessions twice a month, and a quiz every Thursday evening. It does food at lunchtimes only.”

CAMRA Southport and West Lancs Branch has two awards to cover the two distinct areas that it covers: North Merseyside and West Lancashire.

The West Lancashire award was won by Taproom No 12  in Ormskirk.

Neville Grundy said: “Formerly a shop, it has been converted into a single-roomed bar, and the wooden panels and genuine pub furniture successfully recreate the atmosphere of a traditional pub taproom.

“They usually have four real ales on, and they can also sell you 20+ gins as well as craft and continental beers.

“Although it is a small bar, there are several regular events each week: quiz night on Wednesday, open mike on Thursday and live music between 4 pm and 10pm on Saturday.”
