It was a brilliant day of teamwork and community spirit at the Great British Beach Clean at Southport Beach on Friday (26th September 2025).

The event was organised by The Hearth plus the Climate And Sustainability Action (CASA) business network with lots of volunteers turning up to take part.

Supporters included Green Sefton; Making Energy Greener; Carbon Happy World; Gang Of Elk; Hightown Beach Clean; and others.

Between them they collected over 50 kilogrammes of rubbish from the beach.

Everything taken was bagged up and recorded, with the data sent to the Marine Conservation Society to analyse.

The volunteers were treated to some delicious food home-made by talented local chef Dilek, s’mores courtesy of Gang Of Elk, vegan pittas from Nadia and cakes from Cake Corner.

The Hearth directors Rebecca Armstrong and Nadia Speers-Robinson said:

“We’re still buzzing from our Great British Beach Clean today – part of the national movement led by the Marine Conservation Society – and we want to say a huge heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us!

“Fifteen amazing volunteers came together to clean up our beautiful coastline, guided by the brilliant Jordan Scott from Green Sefton. Together, we removed a whopping 50.25kg of litter from the beach!

“We’d like to say special thanks to Tommy and Kath from Hightown Ceach Clean for sharing their expertise – we couldn’t have done it without you.

“Notable finds included:

• 2 beach towels

• 1 king-sized fleece blanket

• Enough socks to clothe a very large spider

• A positively ancient bottle of Fairy Washing Up Liquid

“After the clean, we gathered for a cozy picnic led by the wonderful Becky and Kirsty from Gang of Elk, who wowed us with an artificial campfire (coast-safe!)  and solar ovens made from recycled materials to toast s’mores!

“We also shared: Homemade borek from Dilek

“While we relaxed, Jordan shared the inspiring story of our beach’s transformation into a wetland of international importance – now recognised as a SSSI, Special Conservation Area, and Ramsar Wetland.

“This means Green Sefton is legally obligated to protect this precious ecosystem – and it’s already attracting a new wave of eco-conscious visitors.

“We’re so excited to see this carbon-sequestering landscape celebrated and protected for generations to come.

“Thank you again to everyone who came, cleaned, shared food, and connected. You’re helping shape a more sustainable, community-powered future.”

The Hearth CIC is a new community organisation based in Sefton that hosted its first big event, Earth Day, at Wayfarers Arcade in April.

This free, family-friendly event celebrated sustainability and empowered attendees with practical ways to save money on energy bills while making a positive impact on the planet.

Plans are already underway to create an even bigger Earth Day event for 2026.

They have also founded the Climate And Sustainability Action (CASA) business network to support local businesses to learn more about sustainability.
