Providing the weather forecast does not play us false, the cricket season will begin at Trafalgar Road this weekend when Saturday’s practice session is followed by a proper game against Edgworth on Sunday.
However, by the time Chris Cunningham leads his players out for the pre-season friendly it is a fair bet that many S&B players will already have been enjoying many serious net sessions on the ground.
The obvious enthusiasm at last Friday’s launch evening reflected a club whose members are keen for the chance to achieve the goals they have nurtured over the winter.
And the optimism was by no means confined to the players.
No-one involved in running everyone cricket team these days is in any doubt as to the expense involved, so it was with particular delight that cricket chairman, Andrew Carney, was able to announce new Tier 1 sponsorship agreements with Tower Heating and Go-Factor Business Finance, two local firms whose community involvement matches S&B’s commitment in that area.
“Tower Heating are excited and proud to become sponsors of Southport & Birkdale Sports Club for the 2023 season,” said director Stuart Tomlinson.
“We’re a local, family-run heating business so it feels a natural fit with such a community-focussed club.
“And S&B is definitely a club on an upward trajectory!

“The ground look fantastic and the facilities are being continuously improved, so hats off to the team who’ve put in the hard work.
“We’re really excited to be part of what we know will be a successful season for the club, both on the pitch and in the clubhouse.”
Tomlinson’s views were echoed by Helen Boylett-Smith, owner and managing director of Go-Factor, a leading business finance company providing a range of tailored solutions.
“We are thrilled to partner Southport & Birkdale Cricket and we are looking forward to a successful and long working relationship with the club,” said Boylett-Smith.

“Over the past few weeks we have met with Andrew Carney and Chris Firth and the discussions couldn’t have gone better. It is clear the club has made enormous progress and the future is very exciting. It plays an enormous role in the community by bringing people together and the values of both the club and our business are totally aligned.”
All of which left Andrew Carney a very contented chairman as he hosted the launch evening and looked forward to another season.
“Both sponsors have been a joy to meet and we feel these will be great matches,” he said.
“We are grateful and privileged to be able to announce such exciting partnerships.”
