Southport & Formby Special Athletes have been supported by the Community Link Foundation

The Community Link Foundation has given funding to a sports group to enable them to keep training for a month after their rental fees were increased.

Southport & Formby Special Athletes provide year-round sports activities and opportunities to compete in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual (learning) disabilities. The group gives them the opportunity to develop physical fitness, achieve their potential and increase their self esteem.

They currently meet every week for sports training sessions at Southport College but an increase in the hire costs has put a huge pressure on the organisation’s finances.

While they look at their options for the future, Community Link Foundation agreed to cover their hire costs for the next month, so they are able to continue with the training sessions ensuring there is no impact on the athletes.

Enda Rylands, Chair of Community Link Foundation, said:

“We are proud to support this amazing group of athletes by ensuring they have a place to train, develop and enjoy themselves. Their dedication is an inspiration, and we are honoured to be able to help them in some way. We look forward to seeing what they achieve in the future.”

Chris Ratcliffe, Chair of Southport & Formby Special Athletes, said:

“The athletes and Committee of Southport & Formby Special Athletes are grateful for the donation from the Community Link Foundation.

“We provide training in various sports for people with intellectual disabilities. The money will go towards the high cost of hiring the Sports Hall at Southport College on Sunday mornings.”

Anyone interested in joining Southport and Formby Special Athletes as an athlete or volunteer can contact Chris for further information on 07779 241906.
