Saturday afternoon at Waterloo Road was to be the game that would decide who would win the

NC2 North (West) women’s Rugby Union league between Southport RFC Ladies and Trafford MVLadies.

Southport Ladies have been flying high in the league after being demoted last season and with new players and a positivity within the team, they have gone from strength to strength remaining unbeaten all season both home and away.

With an away fixture to Workington Ladies and a home game against Burnley still to play, Southport Ladies can celebrate early after a thrilling 55-0 win against their closest competition for the title of league winners.

A hard fought win for Southport away at Trafford before Christmas meant that the return fixture would not be an easy one. However, Southport got off to a flyer and pieced together some solid phases of play and the set piece, that the Ladies have been working so hard on over the last few weeks, looked strong.

Determined carries from the pack set the platform for the backs to execute the moves from training and it wasn’t long before Southport broke through and full back Partington got the Ladies off the mark with a fantastic run and the first of her 2 tries.

A further 2 tries from Birchall and youngster McArdle and a try for the ever versatile Simpson, put Southport very much in the driving seat.

Big hits from both sides showed why both teams are where they are in the table but Trafford were simply unable to penetrate Southport’s stellar defence. The second half saw more of the same; tries from McCluskey and Thomas put a Trafford comeback too far out of reach and with 5 conversions overall from Birchall, Southport ran out clear winners.

A fantastic win for Southport from a very physical game against a very physical opposition but the ladies can now take everything learnt from this league and implement it in what will be a new and deserved challenge next season.

Southport RFC Ladies next home fixture will be on Sunday 3rd April against Burnley Ladies
