Southport’s MP is calling for throwlines to be installed around the lake in Botanic Gardens in Churchtown.

Damien Moore made his appeal during a debate on Throwline Stations in Parliament on Monday.

It follows the tragic death of young Southport man Ben Smith-Crallan, who died after falling into the lake at the Botanic Gardens in Churchtown in Southport in June 2018.

Ben’s death has since led to the creation of the ‘Make A Change For Botanic’ campaign, led by his best friend David Rawsthorne, which has so far raised over £25,000 to carry out essential safety improvement works at the park.

Raising his case during a Westminster Hall Debate on Monday, Southport MP Damien Moore said: “I am sure that many of my colleagues are aware of the tragic incident involving Ben Smith-Crallan, who fell into a lake in Southport’s Botanic Gardens and sadly died following complications from an infection.

“Following the ‘Make a change for Ben’ campaign, led by my constituent David Rawsthorne, tens of thousands of pounds have been raised for improvement works to the gardens, including the installation of an aeration fountain at the end of the lake to ensure that water is oxygenised, and potential measures to stop people falling in.

“I would add throwlines to the list of safety measures that need to be included.”

During the debate in Parliament, Damien Moore called for bags and throwlines to be placed around open bodies of water. He wants more opportunities for people to learn how to swim and spread awareness around water safety.

New water aeration fountains are due to be installed in the Botanic Gardens soon.

Make A Change For Botanic founder David Rawsthorne said: “The contractor PHL services Ltd has now had the go ahead to start works on installation of the two fountains, but unfortunately they are waiting on parts that have been delayed in transit due to Covid etc.

“But I’m assured as soon as these parts are delivered the installation will take place, hopefully a matter of weeks at most.

“I’m really excited about this, they will be a lasting tribute to my best friend Ben, and myself and his family will officially turn them on privately as a way to mark the occasion.

“Exciting times, and just the first of many improvements we will be making to our ‘Jewel of Southport’ in the coming months and years.”

People are invited to enjoy a Botanic Gardens Fun Day at the Botanic Gardens, in Churchtown, in Southport, on Sunday, 19th June, between 10am and 4.30pm.
