Black History Month was celebrated in Southport with a successful event organised by SACHA (Southport African Caribbean Heritage Association).

They held a busy day of events which included a Black History Children’s Workshop and a special screening of Milestone: Streets Paved With Gold.

This event took place at Leyland Road Methodist Church in Southport.

SACHA founder Gemma Collins said: “Our last event – Milestone: Streets Paved with Gold, with a creative workshop for children followed by a powerful film screening was a day where we paused, we listened, and we reflected.

“It was where SACHA brought our community together.

“The film captured so much of our society: the pain, grief, loss of identity and belonging, but also the resilience of a people who continue to live, contribute and build legacies across generations.

“There was sadness in the room. A sense of what has been lost, what remains misunderstood, and how much of the Windrush generation’s story is still waiting to be truly recognised by those in positions of power.

“These stories may feel like history, but for many they are still very much alive. They shape identity, belonging and the experiences of generations who follow.

“Victor challenged us to find our own three words — words that capture our story, our experience or what we want others to understand.

“I hope we take that challenge away with us. Our stories matter. Each experience is individual, yet together they help us understand the bigger picture. We must keep telling our stories, listening to one another and learning from the past to shape a better future.

“Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped create a space to pause, reflect and connect.

“We are still here. Our stories deserve to be heard. Our legacy deserves to be recognised. And our history must help shape our future.”
