During Baby Loss Awareness Week, taking place from 9th to 15th October 2026, Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (MWL) will come together to support and remember families whose lives have been touched by pregnancy and baby loss.
As part of Baby Loss Awareness Week, special services will be held for families, friends and loved ones wishing to remember and celebrate the lives of babies who have died. The Wave of Light and Candle Lighting Ceremony will take place at 6pm on Wednesday 14th October 2026 at West Lancashire Crematorium and a Baby Loss Remembrance Service will be held at 6pm on Thursday 15th October 2026 in the Hospital Sanctuary, Level One, Whiston Hospital. Both events are open to the community, with no booking required.
In addition, MWL will light up the front of Ormskirk and Whiston hospitals in pink and blue from Friday 9th October to Thursday 15th October 2026 as a visible show of support for Baby Loss Awareness Week.
Reverend Martin Abrams MBE, Spiritual Care and Chaplaincy Lead, who helps organise and lead the events, said:
“I am very pleased that, once again, our hospitals are supporting both Baby Loss Awareness Week and the International Wave of Light.
“The loss of a baby or child can have a profound and lasting impact on families. For many years, this grief was often experienced in silence, but by raising awareness we can help ensure that bereaved parents, siblings and families feel seen, understood and supported.
“These services provide an opportunity to pause, remember and honour much-loved babies and children, whether the loss was recent or many years ago. Through music, readings, poetry and quiet reflection, we hope to offer comfort, compassion and a sense of connection to others who share a similar experience.
“We extend a warm welcome to anyone who feels attending may be helpful and want them to know that support remains available, whenever it is needed.”
