An award-winning chippy with outlets in Southport and West Lancashire has earned three new accolades – for the quality of its pies!
Fylde Fish Bar, which has branches in Birkdale Village, Fylde Road in Marshside and at Ringtail Retail Park in Burscough, was a big winner in the 2021 British Pie Awards taking home one Silver medal and Two Bronze medals.
Fylde Fish Bar is no stranger to awards, being crowned a Regional Winner in The National Fish & Chip Awards 2018, a year when it was named among the top 10 chippies in the UK, having previously been recognised in the awards in 2015 and 2011.
Owners Banico and Jodie Zeniou said: “We are so pleased to announce that we have been recognised again this year at The British Pie Awards and have achieved three certificates;
“Silver for our homemade steak pie.
“Bronze for our gluten free homemade steak pie.
“Bronze for our new sausage and mash chippy pie.
“Thanks to all our customers for all your support and a special thanks to Agnes our assistant manager and Jodie who spend hours each week making hundreds of pies to supply to our three shops.”
The 2021 British Pie Awards saw a meat and potato pie named this year’s overall winner, beating a record number of vegan entries.
The champion, by Nottinghamshire-based Bowring Butchers, was hailed ‘truly scrumptious’ by judges.
It was crowned best of more than 800 pies, including 70 from the vegan category – the most popular in this year’s awards.
Vegan pies were controversially introduced to the awards in 2019 when the overall winner was a curried sweet potato, butternut squash and spinach pie.
The annual celebration is held in Melton Mowbray, home of the pork pie.
Host Matthew O’Callaghan, who is also chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, said: “Each and every year it is fantastic to see the range of delicious pies submitted to the British Pie Awards and this year was no different.
“Bowring Butchers submitted a truly scrumptious pie, and it was agreed across the board that their classic meat and potato masterpiece was the supreme champion of 2021.”
The winners were announced after the contest, at St Mary’s Church, was postponed in March because of Covid.
Some 150 judges inspected entries across 23 categories.
