Radio 1 DJ Adele Roberts is counting down the days to her London Marathon challenge this month, less than 12 months after she completed chemotherapy in her battle against cancer.
The former Big Brother star, from Southport, won’t be doing it alone – she will be taking along her stoma, who she has named ‘Audrey’.
Adele is raising money for Nissan UK, championing diversity and inclusivity as part of the #PossibilitiesProject, and the Attitude Magazine Foundation, which supports LGBTQ+ causes ranging from children’s hospices to those living with HIV.
If anyone would like to donate, please do so via her JustGiving page here.
The 26.2 mile race will be a tough challenge for Adele, who underwent surgery for bowel cancer just a year and a half ago.
The radio presenter and DJ, who grew up in Southport, was diagnosed with cancer at the start of October 2021 and soon underwent an operation to remove a tumour.
A few months on and she’s incredibly taking on the iconic London Marathon, which happens to take place during Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.
Adele said: “Just 12 days to go until we attempt to set a Guinness World Record at this year’s London Marathon!
“To even make the start line this year will make me so proud.
“Thank you to every single person who has helped me get here.
“It was beyond what I could imagine this time last year. It’s less than 12 months since I finished chemotherapy. To think I could even attempt a marathon… and then maybe set a Guinness World Record… and then to do it all during #BowelCancer Awareness Month absolutely blows my mind!
“I won’t be doing it alone. I’ll have my trusty little friend Audrey the stoma on the course with me.
“She’s essentially a part of my small intestine that’s currently hanging out of my stomach… which isn’t ideal but Audrey is the very reason I’m alive – she’s a LEGEND and I’m so grateful to have her.
“My body post cancer is very different and it’s still recovering. Fuelling my body is an absolute mission. Anything I eat or drink will end up in my bag… One way or another, I’m literally going to have to carry my food and drink with me. It’s given a whole new meaning to the term ‘bum bag’.
“It’s going to be a huge challenge but that’s why I’m doing this.
“Firstly I feel extremely lucky to be alive. You can’t control what happens to you in life but you ARE in charge of how you respond. Keep your spirit strong. Like the incredible Dame Deborah said: “Rebellious Hope”.
“I hope I can represent those living with cancer and their families. All the incredible ostomates around the UK. You’re all made of tough stuff, always remember that… and I hope I can do you proud. Let’s show the world what we are capable of and what our bodies can do!
“Thank you to Nissan UK for allowing me to be a part of your fabulous #PossibilitesProject I am so proud to be your ambassador alongside Richard Whitehead MBE, a man who is the epitome of strength and belief. If you need a boost today make sure you give him a follow.
“During our marathon attempt, I will be raising vital funds for the wonderful Attitude Magazine Foundation. Please support us if you can and donate via myJustGiving page.
“Anything you can spare will be greatly appreciated.”
