Southport fisherman and fishmonger Kevin Peet has starred in a documentary on national German TV.
Kevin, who owns Peets Plaice fish shop in Churchtown Village and has fished off the coast of Southport for over 40 years, was featured in the ‘Legendäres Liverpool’ documentary.
The MareTV feature for NDR/ARD tells Kevin’s remarkable story and also the wider life of Liverpool: its culture, its working heritage, and its enduring connection to the sea.
The production crew travelled from Hamburg, a great German port city with its own long maritime tradition, to document Liverpool’s coast for the series, which finds the most fascinating stories of people and the sea around the world.
They spent a day with Kevin and his friend, Colin Reader, filming them as they set off from Formby Beach, heading out to sea, and catching Southport shrimps along with other seafood.
Kevin still uses traditional fishing methods which have been used by Southport fishermen for centuries, dragging a wide net through the shallows to catch shrimps as the tide recedes.
He then sells his catch to local families who call into his shop, as well as to local restaurants, hotels and other venues.

Kevin has maintained Southport’s long-established fishing and shrimping heritage.
He heads out to sea and lands fish including cod and seabass, which he sells in his shop.
Kevin also has a smoker behind his home in Marshide which enables him to create his own smoked fish including smoked haddock.
He is particularly famous for catching the iconic Southport shrimps before cooking and potting them, creating his famous Southport potted shrimps.
He has sold them all over the UK, most famously to the Queen Mother.
His Peets Plaice website now sells and delivers Southport potted shrimps and other seafood across the UK.

“This is a huge part of Southport’s heritage. I used to love heading out fishing with my Dad, and I still enjoy it today.
“You can’t get fresher than fish and seafood you’ve caught yourself off our coast!
“It would be brilliant to see the BBC screen an English version of this documentary in the UK.
“Since the programme aired in Germany, I’ve had a brilliant response.
“One German viewer who saw it, who lives in the UK, has even been to visit my Peets Plaice shop in Churchtown!
“Thanks to my website, which offers next day seafood deliveries across the UK, I have also seen an increase in online sales from people who have seen it from all over the country.
“It has been an amazing experience.”
Peets Plaice celebrated its 10th birthday in Churchtown in Southport last year, having moved to the Village from Southport Market.
As well as fish he catches himself, the fish at Peets Plaice is landed locally, either at Fleetwood or Scotland.
Top produce on his fresh fish counter includes: cod, salmon, hake, tuna, halibut, sea bass, smoked salmon, monkfish, Royal Greenland prawns, crayfish, crab, dressed crab, Scottish rope mussels, lemon sole, kippers, rollmop herrings, fish pie mix, smoked cod, smoked haddock, and much more besides.
Peets Plaice is building up to its busy Christmas period with extended hours.
There will be normal hours until 20th December and then:

Monday 22nd December – 8am-4pm
Tuesday 23rd December 2025 – 8am-4pm
Christmas Eve – 7am-1pm
Marshside Brass Band will once again be playing outside Peets Plaice, from 10am on Saturday 20th December 2025.
