West Lancashire Yacht Club’s (WLYC) iconic 24 Hour Dinghy Sailing Race in Southport returns this weekend, 13th–14th September 2025, bringing a full day of thrilling endurance racing to Southport’s Marine Lake.
Now in its 54th running, the event continues to grow in popularity, with entries up 25% on last year, underscoring the race’s enduring appeal to sailors of all ages and experience levels.
First held in 1967, the WLYC 24 Hour Race has become a landmark of the UK dinghy sailing calendar. Following its revival last year, this year’s race once again highlights the passion, skill, and stamina of crews who sail through changing winds and into the early hours, while celebrating teamwork and community spirit.

With 60+ entries, 800+ participants, 200+ volunteers from across the sailing community putting in 300+ shifts, the event today is a model of the collaborative spirit which imbues our sport. Volunteers from the competing clubs play a central role in making the race a sustainable success, from safety crews and stewards to local businesses lending a helping hand. WLYC works closely with Sefton Council, fellow yacht clubs, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), and headline sponsor International, with additional support from Marine Supplies Direct, Rooster, Harken, Allen, SailPics, TEU, and Ocean Plaza.

Their combined efforts ensure the event runs smoothly while remaining a celebration of teamwork, endurance, and community.
WLYC Commodore Richard Westlake said:
“This event has always been more than a race—it’s a tradition that brings sailors, families, and the community together. With a record number of entries this year, it’s clear that the WLYC 24 Hour Race continues to capture hearts and imaginations. Our volunteers, supporters, and sponsors make it all possible, and we’re proud to showcase the best of sailing and Southport in this unique event.”

The race kicks off at 12 noon on Saturday 13th September 2025 and runs non-stop until 12 noon on Sunday 14th September. WLYC welcomes everyone—sailors and non-sailors alike—to join in the fun, whether by volunteering, supporting the competitors, or enjoying the lively community spirit along the lake.
