The Engine Room in Southport is opening for co-working!

The new creative and digital hub, on the first and second floors of Wayfarers Arcade on Lord Street, will welcome its first visitors this Tuesday (6th February 2023).

The initiative is even offering discounts for people during the month of February.

The ambitious initiative aims to “kickstart a regeneration of Wayfarers Arcade and historic Lord Street”.

The Engine Room is being developed by Dr Eric Lybeck, a Senior Lecturer at the Manchester Institute of Education, has been working closely with partners including Southport BID and Southport College to bring his vision to life.

He said: “Join us! As of this Tuesday (6th February 2024), we will be open for co-working.

“Our membership structure is simple: £50 a month and you’re in.

“And, in February, we’re offering half off of that – just enter ‘FEBSALE’ at checkout, then it’s a rolling subscription after that. Cancel anytime.

“Normally, this gives you access to high-speed internet (1GB per second) and bottomless filter coffee – however, due to installation delays, we can only offer 70MB before the fibre line goes live.

“As a member, you will also be able to book our rooms as they become available. This includes smaller, quieter spaces for Zoom calls, or louder, larger spaces for events and courses

“Do you have a course you’d like to offer? Provided there’s availability and it’s in line with our aims and values, you can book our rooms on a shared or exclusive basis to share your knowledge and craft with others.

“In time, we might charge a fee for this, but for now, all you need to do is join as a member and drop Eric R Lybeck a note with your ideas for dates and times.

“Soon we’ll have even more facilities, like photography studios for social media production , podcasting suites  and more. These too will be bookable for low extra fees.

“We’ll adapt to the needs of members – so, join us today to shape the future development of the #engineroom #southport.”

The Engine Room has also launched a crowdfunding campaign, which you can support here: IndieGoGo website here

Dr Lybeck said: “We’ve got less than a year to prove we can make this work! The owner has given us our space for a peppercorn rent on the basis that we can raise funding from public, private and philanthropic sources to support creativity in Southport.

“Between January and June 2024 we need to fill our creative Engine Room space with activity – capturing the demand amongst the Southport community for a dynamic space for young and old people to come together for new and exciting ventures, courses, events, meetings and chance encounters – we really do have the potential to kickstart a regeneration of Wayfarers Arcade and historic Lord Street.”
