A Southport hair salon is making big changes to become more sustainable as they appeal for support from local people.

Element 5, a hair, make-up and brow salon on Tulketh Street in Southport town centre, wants to make steps to recycle more in a number of areas, saying: “building a better future is everyone’s responsibility, and together we can make a real difference for the next generation”.

Element5 is keen to start recycling items such as hair from haircuts, colour tubes, foils and more.

To support the changes, they are asking customers if they would back their idea of a £1 Green Fee per client.

Owner Tracy Badley Robinson said: “We’re taking steps towards a greener future!

“At Element 5, we care not only about great hair but also about the world we live in. That’s why we’re looking to take a big step towards becoming more sustainable – but we need your support to make it happen.

“Currently, most salon waste in the UK ends up in landfill because councils don’t recycle items like hair, colour tubes, or foils. Shockingly, only 1% of salon foils are recycled in the UK! We want to change that.

“By working with an award-winning, B-Corp certified company (with a score of 113.7 – well above the pass rate of 80!) we’ll be able to recycle:

“Hair from haircuts – reused for composting, gardening, cleaning waterways, making textiles & even wool alternatives.

“Metals like colour tubes & foils – properly recycled instead of going to landfill.

And much more!

“This company has already diverted 179.5 tonnes of salon waste from landfill and supports brilliant charities, including Surfers Against Sewage through their Water Fund. By joining them, we’d not only reduce waste but also contribute to protecting our oceans and environment.

“To make this possible, we would introduce a small £1 ‘Green Fee’ per client, per appointment. This fee would go directly towards funding these sustainable changes.

“We believe building a better future is everyone’s responsibility, and together we can make a real difference for the next generation.

“Now we’d love to hear from YOU:

“Would you support us in introducing this £1 Green Fee to help make Element 5 a more sustainable salon?

Yes – count me in!

Yes, and I’m proud to support sustainability in hairdressing!

Not right now.

“Please vote in our poll on our social media pages and share your thoughts in the comments. “Your opinion matters, and together we can shape a greener, brighter future.”
