Lancashire will join Southport and the rest of the Liverpool City Region in Tier 3 Covid safety measures.
The decision follows a recent rise in Coronavirus levels that places the area in the ‘Very High’ category.
The Liverpool City Region and Lancashire are the first two areas of England to enter into the new Tier 3 category.
Measures include the closures of pubs and bars, unless they act in a similar way to restaurants and serve substantial meals.
There will also be bans on separate households mixing indoors, in private gardens and most outdoor venues.
The deal involves a support package worth £42million.
Around 1.5 million people will be affected by the new rules, exact details of which will be announced today.
On Thursday, London, Essex, York and parts of Surrey, Derbyshire and Cumbria were moved up to Tier 2 and will face tougher measures from Saturday.
The new three-tier system sees every area of England classed as being on medium, high or very high alert – also known as Tiers 1 to 3, respectively.
Areas on very high alert – at present, the Liverpool City Region – face extra curbs, with different households banned from mixing indoors or outdoors in hospitality venues or private gardens.
In that level people from different households can still meet in certain outdoor public spaces, such as parks, beaches, the countryside, forests, public gardens, allotments, outdoor sports facilities and playgrounds.
Pubs and bars will be closed unless they are serving substantial meals and there is also guidance against travelling in and out of the area.
