The team at The Bold are celebrating after winning the prestigious accolade of the best hotel in Southport.

The Bold, on Lord Street, won the ‘Hotel or Guest House of the Year Award’ in the 2025 Your Southport Stars Awards, organised by Southport BID.

The venue, which was acquired and transformed by Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group a decade ago, was recognised as the Business Leaders Award winner by a judging panel of business leaders.

The oldest hotel in Southport, the Georgian-style masterpiece has been welcoming hotel guests since it first opened in 1832.

The nearby Lord Street Hotel, also owned by Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group, was a Finalist in the Hotel of The Year category in the Your Southport Stars Awards.

The glittering annual event was held at The Grand on Lord Street in Southport on Tuesday 13th May 2025 with over 100 Southport businesses competing for honours across 11 sector-specific categories.

Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group Chair Andrew Mikhail said:

“Winning the Southport Hotel of The Year Award is a massive achievement!

“We have some fantastic hotels and guest houses in Southport and we’re proud that The Bold has been recognised as the top one.

“It’s a great accolade to win ahead of a busy May Bank Holiday, the summer season with some huge events, The Open Golf Championship coming to Southport next year and with major new investment to create exciting new attractions in Southport such as the Marine Lake Events Centre.

“Southport is going to become even busier, attracting visitors not just locally and nationally but from across the world, and the quality of the accommodation and experience that we offer has to be top class.

“I would like to pay tribute to The Bold General Manager Kelsie Buck and also to Mark Sloan, Jeanette Gordon, Lee Whittaker-Locke, our reception team, our events team, our events team, our chefs, our cleaners, our housekeepers, all of them, from top to bottom.

“It is not just what you see on the surface that makes a hotel special but also the huge amount of hard work that goes on behind the scenes.

“I’d like to express my gratitude to all our staff, I know just how hard they all work.

“It’s enabled us to keep achieving results which are above what is being achieved elsewhere in the hospitality sector during these times.

“This Hotel of The Year Award is also testament to our customers, both locally in Southport and also from across the UK, who keep coming to enjoy stays, meals, and events at The Bold. We really appreciate their ongoing support as they keep coming back time after time.

“We like to think of The Bold as a very hospitable, friendly, family hotel which hosts all types of functions including Christenings, baby showers, birthday celebrations, Christmas events and more.

“We are always booked out early during Christmas time – The Bold and The Grand are the places to be in Southport to celebrate the festive season – while The Bold Carvery is well known as the best carvery in Southport!

“We have recently revamped our main menus and have launched our new Summer Menu, which is proving to be hugely popular, and has led to a substantial increase in diners.”

The Bold has been elevated beyond recognition since it was bought by Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group a decade ago.

Andrew Mikhail said:

“When we bought The Bold, it was in a really poor state, as was most of what we now call ‘The Northern Quarter’ of Lord Street.

“We took the building back to brick and replaced the floors, rewired it, practically rebuilt it from top to bottom.

“We have carried out two major refurbishments since, the most recent at the start of 2024. We have kept improving. We have invested millions of pounds to bring The Bold up to the high standard it is now.

“Since then we have also opened our sister venues nearby including: The Grand; Lord Street Hotel; Lord Street Hotel Sports Bar; Harry’s Bar; Punch Tarmeys; and Mavericks.

“It means that we can operate as one complex and that guests can enjoy everything we have to offer across all our different venues, which makes for an even greater experience when they come and visit.

“Our constant investment and determination to raise the quality of what we offer means The Northern Quarter of Southport has become a real destination.

“We have a really big year ahead now as we look forward to The Open, and we do so with The Bold as the Southport Hotel Of The Year; we are really excited about the good times ahead.”
