Southport’s very own 24 Hour Race has been named ‘Event of the Year’ at the prestigious Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Dinghy Show, bringing national recognition to this spectacular endurance challenge on the Marine Lake.
This award is an incredible achievement for only the first year back after a break during the pandemic. The 2024 race marked the revival of this much-loved event, and despite the short lead time, 50 teams and over 600 competitors took to the water. The recognition reflects the hard work, dedication, and passion of the West Lancashire Yacht Club (WLYC) team, the volunteers from sailing clubs across the UK, and the enthusiastic local community who helped bring the race back bigger and better than ever.
A Historic Event with Local Heart
While the WLYC 24 Hour Race has become famous across the UK, it is very much a Southport success story. First held in 1967, this unique event is an endurance test like no other, bringing teams from across the country to battle through day and night on Marine Lake.

Richard Westlake, Commodore of WLYC, said:
“Reviving the 24 Hour Race in 2024 was a huge team effort, and to be recognised with this award is fantastic. This race isn’t just about competition – it’s about the spirit of sailing, teamwork, and bringing people together. We’re so proud of what we achieved in our first year back, and we can’t wait to build on this success for 2025.”
Last year’s event saw thrilling action, with teams pushing through the night, tackling challenging conditions, and cheered on by enthusiastic crowds gathered along the lake’s edge. The event isn’t just for sailors – it’s a real spectacle for Southport residents, offering an exciting, free sporting event right in the heart of the town.
Bigger and Better for 2025 – Get Involved!
With the national award now boosting its profile, WLYC is aiming for an even bigger event in 2025. The club hopes to increase participation to 75 teams, bringing even more excitement and visitors to the town.
The 2025 race is already open for entries, with teams of all levels invited to take part. It’s a true test of teamwork and endurance, with sailors competing in Fireflies, GP14s, and Enterprises in a non-stop relay-style race for 24 hours.
For those who don’t sail but love to be part of big events, there are plenty of ways to get involved:
- Spectators can enjoy the thrilling racing action from the lake’s edge.
- Local businesses can benefit from increased footfall and sponsorship opportunities.
- Volunteers are needed to help run the event – a great way to be part of something special.
