Interest in floristry is blooming thanks to growing interest during the Covid lockdowns of the past two years.
Budding florists explored their creative side while at home, as people sought to develop new passions.
Some are now enrolled as Floristry students in a new course taking place at Southport College.
The subject has proved so popular that the College has now unveiled a new course starting in January for those aged 19 plus, with another due to start next September for those aged 16-19.
As well as offering a chance to learn new skills, students can also earn a Level 2 Floristry City & Guilds Qualification – with the course completely FREE. All materials are provided.
There are huge benefits for the local community too.
Friday is Floristry day, with students creating a special Flower Market in the Southport College Reception on Mornington Road. Everything created by students during Friday goes on sale from 1pm onwards at cost price. There are great bargains to be had.
Students are enjoying a Floristry course at Southport College
Floristry course tutor Lynette Smith is reaching out to local businesses who might be looking for floral arrangements for their restaurants, hotels, bars or other premises.
Her talented students can create something beautiful, specific to the individual needs of the business, at an amazing price.
It enables the students to soak up some real-life experience, while those taking advantage of the offer can enjoy beautiful flowers at very affordable prices.
Lynette Smith will carry out a consultation with any business interested, while personally overseeing any work undertaken to ensure that it is up to standard.

The current course began in October and will run until June. It is proving to be extremely popular. So much so, that two new courses are already being planned due to the huge interest.
Lynette said: “Our current course is aimed at adults looking to build skills in floristry with a view to changing careers or hobbies since the pandemic. It runs every Friday between 9.30am and 3pm, so it fits in with the school run, which is really good.
“It results in a City & Guilds Level 2 qualification in Floristry. It is not just a hobby to take up, it is also useful for anyone who wants to take up floristry as a profession. We also have follow-on courses that specialise in wedding work and funeral floral design should learners want to continue further with us.

“A real bonus is that the course is completely free to anyone 19 plus living in the Liverpool City Region, regardless of income.
“We already have a number of new students waiting to join us for our new course, which will start in January and run until December, with a summer holiday in between.
“And next September we will be launching a new course which will be suitable for 16-18 year olds, with the opportunity for students to develop their English and maths, alongside study skills. We will be encouraging learners to develop their floristry skills through a work placement. No previous qualifications are required for entry to the course, we’ll provide a full time study programme for school leavers to develop all they need to enter industry.”
The courses are very vocational, with students developing their skills in a practical way. They are keen to gain as much experience as they can in the outside world, and would love local businesses to get in touch with anything they need.
Lynette said: “With Christmas coming up, the students will be making things like festive table centres, or wreaths, that might be of interest to local firms, such as hotels or restaurants.
“I am happy to go out and do consultations with any businesses who might be interested.
“It is really good for the local community to be able to support our students, and to support the College.
“This is a very vocational course so it is a good opportunity for our students to create something which will be useful for local firms.”
Lynette is now looking forward to new Floristry courses starting after the success of the current crop.
She said: “Because of the growing popularity, we will be starting our next course in January, every Thursday between 9.30am and 3pm. There are still some places available, although capacity is limited. No previous qualifications or experience is needed, just apply.
“I have done floristry all my life, I really enjoy it. I ran floristry businesses in Banks and in Ormskirk before going back into education, where I studied plant and soil science to complement my floristry background. This eventually led me to forensic science and a whole new career.
“Even whilst developing a new career, floristry has always been in the background. With over 25 years’ experience in the industry, I have continued to do weddings, funerals, and Christmas floral designs for family and friends. Like everyone during the pandemic I reflected on what I wanted and going back to floristry I knew would support my own wellbeing and bring joy and wellbeing to others. I was able to bring my two passions together, teaching and floristry, to develop this course for the college.
“I was keen to start a new Floristry course because I wanted to go back to my creative side.
“Floristry became very popular during lockdown. Lots of people were trying it from their own homes.
“It is a sign of the times, it enjoyed a growing interest during the pandemic.
“People were becoming very reflective, and saying to themselves ‘what can I do that’s for me’?
“In my first session, I asked people ‘what brings you to floristry?’ It was a very emotional morning, when people were telling me why they wanted to do it. The students have come from all sorts of backgrounds[LS3] . And the wonderful cohort of learners has built supportive friendship groups with the love of flowers being the central theme. We love our floristry Fridays with giggles, beautiful flowers and one learner bringing in cakes each week. I’d like to think that the course is doing so much more than developing floristry skills but is bringing positive and supportive wellbeing to the learners.
“They absolutely love the course, they really enjoy coming each week, and enjoy saying what the course is doing for them.
“We have set up our own Southport College Floristry page on Instagram, floristrysouthport, and now some of the students are setting up their own Instagram pages to show what they can do.
“As well as enjoying the course, it is also great that they earn a City & Guilds qualification at the end of it, as well as taking up a great course for free[LS4] .
“The Flower Market and the Instagram page are seeing a growing following. The students and I are taking great pride in the work being displayed and are enjoying the new social media platform to share our ideas, something that is completely new for some of our learners.”
