The proposed new Marine Lake Events Centre in Southport will “create a significant number of job opportunities for local residents” and will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year that will “help fuel the local economy”.
The ambitious £73 million regeneration scheme will be decided at Sefton Council’s Planning Committee meeting this Thursday (27th April 2023).
It is forecast to attract an additional 515,000 visitors to Southport every year and add £18 million to the local economy.
It would create 290 gross direct on-site and off-site operational jobs.
Southport MP Damien Moore is among local people backing the scheme.
He said: “The Marine Lake Convention Centre, a central part of the £38.5m Town Deal I helped to secure for Southport, will be a vital addition to our local area, if approved at Sefton Council’s Planning Committee meeting.
“The development will create a significant number of job opportunities for local residents, so that we can retain our town’s talent. Additionally, visitors attending the centre for events and conventions will help fuel the local economy, giving our community a new lease of life.
“From meeting with local business owners, I have heard first-hand how the new Convention Centre and related plans are encouraging private investment in Southport. I look forward to seeing how the Government’s Towns Fund will continue to be a driving force for Southport’s bright future.”
Sefton Council’s Planning Committee meeting will be held at The Waterfront Hotel, Promenade, Southport. PR9 0DZ from 6.30pm this Thursday, 27th April 2023.

Plans for the £73 million new Southport Marine Lake Events Centre will also include proposals for a spectacular water and light show on Marine Lake.
The ambitious project, the central development of Southport Town Deal, will replace the former Southport Theatre and Convention Centre which closed in March 2020.
The proposed new development would be a modern building comprising a 1,200 seat theatre (1,500 capacity seating standing), and a conference centre with a capacity of 2,400.
In his report to the committee Sefton Chief Planning Officer Derek McKenzie said: “The proposed development would make a significant contribution to the regeneration of the wider Southport area, increasing tourism and bringing with it substantial social and economic benefits not just to Southport but Sefton.”
