After a long break due to the pandemic, Southport Spotlights Musical Theatre Society are pleased to announce that they are back with their next show – “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”.

This will be performed at the Little Theatre from 29th June to 2nd July.

They are the society that performed The Producers, Boogie Nights, Sister Act, The Wedding Singer and Sunset Boulevard and many others.

This Tony Award winning, fabulous, fun-filled show follows the adventures of six children, all hilariously played by adults, thrust into a school spelling competition at a time in their lives when they’re still trying to figure out exactly who they are and what they want from life.

As the spellers are eliminated, the survivors and the losers make their quiet and often painful progression toward adulthood until, at the end of the show, there’s nothing left to do but explain exactly how this one fateful day impacted all their lives.

The fast-paced and very funny musical is a triumphant tribute to not just the victor, but to the art of competition and the glory of youth, in which – in many ways – anything goes, and everyone can be a winner. This not-to-be-missed Broadway gem features toe-tapping tunes, some audience participation and some of the most endearing characters to grace a stage.

Spotlights are keen to attract new members to join them for this great musical. They are looking for people aged 16 or over who can sing, dance and act. They promise a warm welcome.

They are holding what is termed a “talk-up” for the show at 7:30pm on Monday 7th February at their rehearsal room in Greenbank High School, Hastings Road, Birkdale (nearest station Hillside).

At this meeting the Director, Stephen Hughes-Alty, and Musical Director, Adam Dutch, will give more details about the show and the parts involved.

Southport Spotlights are also looking for people to help backstage and front of house. If you are interested, go to the same meeting and ask for a committee member.
