Sefton is one of England’s fastest growing areas for the rate of Covid-19 infections.
The borough, which includes Southport, Formby and Bootle, has seen Coronavirus cases rise by 111% over the past two weeks as Prime Minister Boris Johnson prepares to reveal the UK’s latest lockdown measures on TV at 8pm tonight (Monday 4 January).
While three quarters of the nation was put into tough Tier 4 ‘Stay At Home’ measures on Boxing Day, Sefton was placed in Tier 3 ‘Very High’.
It meant that all shops, gyms and other businesses have been able to remain open while having to close in other areas.
New figures show that Sefton is the seventh fastest growing area for Covid cases in the country, reaching a rate of 333.9 cases per 100,000 people over the last two weeks of the most recent figures.
The rate in Sefton in the seven days up to 23 December 2020 were 173.7 per 100,000.
Yesterday Sefton Council advised parents that local schools would reopen this week, despite the recent rise in Covid cases. The situation may change in the coming days.
