A new bistro with beautiful views across the Marine Lake will be created to sit over the top of the historic Pleasureland Miniature Railway.
The new venture will sit alongside the spectacular 35 metre illuminated observation wheel being planned to stand proudly next to Southport’s Marine Lake.
The new attractions aim to create further reasons for visitors to come to our seaside resort.
The historic Lakeside Miniature Railway, which runs alongside the Marine Lake on the seafront at Southport, was opened in 1911 and is one of the oldest continually running miniature railways in the world.
The scheme will also involve the demolition of one of Southport biggest eyesores, the former public toilets at Princes Park.
A report prepared for Supreme Attractions Ltd by RAL Chartered Architects said: “The project is to install a large wheel attraction with small bistro / café on a temporary (3 years) permission, to be located at the eastern edge of Princes Park, Southport on the site of a redundant and derelict public convenience.
“The wheel is to be located on the site of a redundant public convenience. The building is derelict and a blight to both the lakeside environment, and to the historic Princes Park. This building will be demolished as part of this proposal.
“The wheel will be located alongside the existing path to the south east of Princes Park on the grass. This is an indistinct piece of land at the edge of Princes Park and raised above the miniature railway and Marine Lake edge path to the east.
“The wheel base sits on the ground without the need for excavation. The base will be extended to oversail the miniature railway to provide a platform for a small bistro / café and create a tunnel for the train to pass through.
“The bistro will have panoramic views across Marine Lake.
“The location of the wheel will provide spectacular views through 360º, to the beach to the west and over the lake and Southport to the east.
“The wheel will be operated by Southport Pleasureland and the opening times will match those of the theme park.
“The applicant considers this to be a significant additional facility for Southport Pleasureland and will provide a draw for all people visiting the town.”
The Pleasureland Miniature Railway railway runs between Pleasureland Station and Marine Parade Station, next to Ocean Plaza.
The railway currently operates four locomotives: Duke of Edinburgh (1950), Golden Jubilee (1963), Princess Anne (1971) & Jenny (2006).
The announcement about the town’s new statement structure is part of plans to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Southport Pleasureland’s miniature railway – the world’s oldest constantly running 15-inch gauge railway.
Southport Pleasureland owner Norman Wallis took ownership of the Lakeside Miniature Railway in February 2016.
He said: “The wheel is a real show-stopper and I think the town deserves a landmark feature of this calibre and we believe it will be incredibly popular.
“The views will be breath-taking and the observation wheel itself will be able to be clearly seen when approaching the town.
“This fabulous iconic feature will give people yet another reason to stop and admire the sea views – and make a hugely positive addition to Southport’s visitor appeal.”
The wheel, which will be the highest accessible vantage-point near the seafront, will offer long-ranging, wide-vista views to passengers in its series of fully accessible six-person glass pods.
Its LED lighting can be tailored to offer spectacular, eye-catching displays which will be reflected in the lake’s waters after dark.
The giant wheel, which will also offer opportunities for special VIP experiences and be available for private hire and corporate events, has been built-to-order by leisure and attractions expert Norman Wallis.
The huge structure will be delivered this summer and is set to transform the skyline of Southport with spectacular panoramic views.
A planning application has been submitted to Sefton Council.
