Hundreds of people turned out to cheer on the return of the Southport Charity Christmas Parade as it roared its way through Southport on Sunday night!

The North West’s biggest vehicle light parade was sadly postponed last year due to rising Covid numbers and sudden Covid restrictions.

But it came back in style thanks to scores of wagons, vans, cars, tractors and other vehicles, all covered in Christmas lights and other lighting and making as much noise as they could!

Horns were beeped and festive music rang out to the delight of crowds. Many drivers and passengers wore their finest festive fancy dress outfits.

The parade is the brainchild of Adam Holmes-Brown and Paul Holmes. Their event sees hundreds of toys donated to children’s organisations in our region.

This year’s event had a poignant element to it too.

The parade paid an emotional tribute to two friends who died in a tragic accident recently.

Marie Cunningham, aged 79, and Grace Foulds, aged 85, passed away following a road traffic collision on Lulworth Road in Birkdale on Tuesday, 30 November.

All those taking part in this year’s parade honoured Marie and Grace as they drove past.

Adam Holmes-Brown and Paul Holmes said: “We received a message from Lynn, the daughter of one of the ladies that sadly lost their lives on Lulworth Road the other day.

“Lynn and her mother watched the parade every year as we passed their home on Lulworth Road.

“Lynn requested that we made as much noise as possible for her mum and her friend.”

This year’s Southport Charity Christmas Parade set out from Pontins in Ainsdale before heading into Ainsdale Village, Hillside Village, past Royal Birkdale Golf Club, before heading down the Promenade and back, ending at Southport Pleasureland.

Families loved the incredible sight of so many illuminated vehicles driving past them.

Speaking on Stand Up For Southport, Jess Thwaites said: “It was spectacular. And so noisy it was hilarious we were laughing shouting to speak. Loads of fun thanks to the organisers.”

Murty Jonnalagedda said: “Lovely to see the spirit of Christmas! Thank you for organising this.”

Nikki Parker said: “Brilliant parade as always.”

Janet Griffiths said: “What a parade, fantastic, well done to all of you who took part, you brought a lot of Christmas joy.”

Alison Ball said: “Brilliant parade once again. Well done to everyone involved!! Such a great sight and all for a good cause too.”

Chris Brown, one of the people taking part in the event, said: “It was a pleasure to support this more than worthy cause and many thanks to the people of Southport for all your support.”

Sorcha Mai O’Brien, who was on board the Sandgrounder Radio bus, said: “We had a wonderful time! What a great turnout! So nice to have all these happy and positive things on! My hands hurt from waving so much now.. how does The Queen cope?”
