Young people in Southport have huge opportunities available through the extensive range of T Level courses now available through Southport College.
There is so much on offer across a range of subjects, with the offering constantly being reviewed and upgraded to suit local employers and demand from students.
I enjoyed a tour of Southport College along with Greenbank High School Headteacher Davina Aspinall, courtesy of Lisa Carlin and Julie Coates.
We only saw some of the impressive facilities and spoke with some of the course tutors.
So what are T Levels?
The ‘T’ stands for “Technical” and they are Level 3 qualifications that will give 16 to 19 year olds a high quality technical alternative to A-levels.
One T Level is equivalent to 3 A-levels and will attract the same number of UCAS points (depending on the grades achieved), so students can use them to progress to University.
T Levels are a full time programme and are taught in College.
However they also include a valuable industry placement for a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) which is delivered in the workplace.
This placement is unpaid and you remain a college student, rather than an employee of the company.
Southport College has been busy forging stronger links with businesses across the region as they develop their T Level provision – they’re happy to hear from any employers who’d like to get in touch to discover more.
Lisa and Julie and the rest of the team at Southport College continue to develop their work with local schools and businesses to support T Level industry placements and apprenticeships.
They are bringing partners together to strengthen these connections and were keen to show us some of this work first-hand, particularly how they are building relationships across the local area and creating opportunities for students.
Sourcing meaningful placements and apprenticeships can sometimes be a challenge, which Southport College is aiming to develop all the time.
Just some of the facilities on offer at the Pennington Building include:
• The Pennington Construction site
• The Eco Hub, which opened last year
• Gas and Electrical workshops
• Hair and Beauty salons
• Adult Care
• Early Years
Particularly impressive were the brand new mock hospital wards which were tailor-made for T-Level Health and Social Care students after Southport College secured £2.3 million funding from the Department for Education’s T-Level Capital Project.
Catering and Hospitality students meanwhile enjoy hands-on experience in Clouds restaurant at Southport College, a working restaurant which offers fantastic views across Southport.
We enjoyed lunch there as we enjoyed conversations about T Levels on offer at Southport College.
